On a non-lucrative or other general-regime visa over six months, your next job is the TIE: apply in person within one month of entering Spain. On a digital nomad visa, you live on the visa without a TIE until your residence authorisation is granted. In Valencia city, non-EU cards come from the Gremis 6 police station, not the Oficina de Extranjería.

Under the general immigration regulation, every foreigner given a visa or authorisation to stay more than six months has the right and duty to get a TIE. You apply personally within one month of entering Spain, or of the authorisation being granted or taking effect.

All foreigners who have been issued a visa or an authorisation to remain in Spain for a period longer than six months have the right and the duty to obtain the foreigner identity card, which they must request in person within one month of entry into Spain or of the authorisation being granted or taking effect.

BOE · Real Decreto 1155/2024, art. 209.1

Organic Law 4/2000 sets the same one-month deadline. Holders of a seasonal residence-and-work visa are exempt. Missing the duties exposes you to the sanctions regime of the Organic Law.

Remote workers on the teleworker visa

On the teleworker visa? That is the exception to the one-month rule. Ley 14/2013, the special law for this visa, lets it authorise residence without a TIE.

Estos visados tendrán validez de un año o igual a la duración de la autorización de residencia, en caso de ser esta inferior, y autorizarán la residencia de su titular en España sin necesidad de tramitar la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero.

These visas will be valid for one year, or for the length of the residence authorisation if that is shorter, and will authorise their holder’s residence in Spain without needing to process the foreigner identity card.

BOE · Ley 14/2013, art. 75.4

You may still request the card while on the visa. Once you switch to the teleworker residence authorisation, a permit of more than six months requires the TIE application.

TIE fees by card type

Table of National Police fees for foreigner identity cards and EU registration certificates
The police fee table shows the TIE fee by type of card, not a single price. Source: Policía Nacional sede electrónica, Tasas de Extranjería (opens in a new tab), captured 14 October 2026

There is no single TIE price: the fee depends on the card.

Card Fee
TIE for a first grant of temporary residence €16.08
TIE for a renewal of temporary residence €19.30
TIE for long-term residence €21.87
TIE for family of Spanish nationals €12
EU citizen registration certificate €12.00

Pay before the appointment: you bring the receipt for the Modelo 790 código 012 fee. The police sede generates it: fill it in on screen, then download and print. Pay at a bank, savings bank or credit cooperative. You do not need an account there.

Book the appointment on ICP

The application needs form EX17 and the proof of payment of the Modelo 790 código 012 fee.

In Valencia the Oficina de Extranjería does not issue the TIE. It does not manage the police appointments either. Get the appointment on the ICP site.

Skip the email route that the Oficina uses for its own in-person appointments. It does not apply to the TIE.

You present the documents in person at the police station for your place of residence. For Valencia city, non-EU cards are issued at the Patraix station, Carrer dels Gremis 6.

Other stations in the province serve their own areas. Alzira is at Carrer Pere Morell 4, Gandia at Carrer Ciudad de Laval 5, Sagunto at Carrer Progreso 35 and Ontinyent at Plaça de l’Escura 2.

The fee 012 covers procedures of the Dirección General de la Policía, for example the fingerprint visit.

Can you stay while you wait for the card?

Yes for a Valencia Oficina grant or renewal: it takes full effect before the TIE exists. The one-month duty to apply for the card still stands. A visa proves your situation from entry until you obtain the TIE.

To collect the card, prove you are its addressee and have paid the fees. Where the authorisation depends on Social Security registration, the police check that registration themselves before issuing the card.

The TIE is personal and non-transferable. It lasts as long as the authorisation behind it.

Renewing, losing the card or moving house

Once a renewal is granted and notified, apply for the new TIE. When the card expires or the authorisation is renewed, hand the old card in at the police station for your place of residence. A renewal leads to a new card with the validity set in the decision.

A lost, destroyed or unusable card is replaced on request. That is not a renewal, and the new card keeps the original expiry date.

If you move, ask the competent police station for a duplicate card and bring your current padrón certificate.

Holders of long-term residence renew the TIE every five years. From the second renewal on, a holder already aged 30 gets a card valid for 10 years.

EU citizen? You get a registration certificate instead

Citizens of EU or EEA countries, and Switzerland, use a different document: the registration certificate. It proves registration in the Central Register of Foreigners for a stay of more than three months.

Apply in person within three months of entering Spain. The form is EX18, with the proof of payment of the Modelo 790 código 012 fee. The certificate costs €12.00 and is issued immediately.

In Valencia city this runs through the Bailén station, Carrer de Bailén 9.

Common questions

How long do I have to apply for the TIE after arriving in Spain?

One month, in person, if a general-regime visa or authorisation lets you stay more than six months. The clock runs from your entry into Spain, or from the authorisation being granted or taking effect. A digital nomad visa is the exception: it authorises residence without a TIE.

Where do I get my TIE in Valencia?

Not the Oficina de Extranjería. People resident in Valencia city go to the Patraix police station at Gremis 6 for non-EU cards. Elsewhere in the province you attend the police station for your place of residence.

How much does the TIE cost?

There is no single fee. A first grant of temporary residence costs €16.08, a renewal €19.30, and a long-term residence card €21.87. The TIE for family of Spanish nationals costs €12. You pay with the Modelo 790 código 012 form.

What do I bring to the TIE appointment?

The police procedure asks for two documents: form EX17 and the proof of payment of the Modelo 790 código 012 fee. You present them personally at the police station for your place of residence. To collect the card you prove you are its addressee and have paid the fees.

Can I stay in Spain while I wait for my TIE?

Yes, a grant or renewal by the Valencia Oficina de Extranjería takes full effect even before the TIE is issued. You still apply for the card within one month of the grant. A visa proves your situation from entry until you obtain the TIE.

Do EU citizens need a TIE?

No. Citizens of EU or EEA countries, and Switzerland, register in the Central Register of Foreigners and receive a registration certificate. You apply in person within three months of entering Spain. The form is EX18 and the fee is €12.00.

What do I do if I lose my TIE or move house?

A lost, destroyed or unusable TIE is replaced by a new card on request, with the original expiry date. If you change address, ask the competent police station for a duplicate and bring your current padrón certificate.

Do I hand in my old card when I renew?

Yes. Hand it in when the card expires, the authorisation is renewed or the right to stay is lost. Use the police station for your place of residence. A renewal leads to a new TIE with the validity set in the decision.
