How to Register with a GP in Valencia (Centro de Salud)

A family doctor in Valencia comes through SIP, not a separate GP registration, because SIP holds your assigned area, zone, centre and doctor. The Conselleria first assigns your centre from your padrón registration. To change doctor or centre, file one request; the head of the basic health zone must resolve it within 15 working days.

Wondering how to see a doctor in Valencia? Your GP comes with your health card registration, so the first step is the SIP.

How do you get a GP in Valencia?

SIP registration is GP registration. SIP holds your identification and your assigned area, zone, centre and doctor. After you register, the health centre issues the health card.

The Conselleria first assigns your centre from your padrón registration. SIP registration itself requires habitual residence in a Valencian municipality, which requires being on its padrón.

For who gets which route and which documents to bring, see the SIP card guide. Two cases need a note here.

Social Security members

Go to your nearest health centre with ID. Bring a current padrón certificate and the INSS document proving your right to health care. The centre registers you in SIP and issues the card.

Private insurance or an EU card

With private insurance, go to your nearest health centre with your NIE or passport. You receive an inclusion document showing your SIP number, not a tarjeta SIP. An EU citizen on a temporary stay takes the European Health Insurance Card to the nearest centre and is entitled to a temporary inclusion document.

Book your first appointment

With your card ready, book by phone, app or website. For the appointment (cita previa), phone the number printed on your SIP card, or call 96 183 90 00. You can also book or cancel through the Sanitat app or the Sanitat website. In the app, enter the SIP number without its first two digits.

Show your SIP card whenever you go to request or receive benefits at public care centres and at pharmacies. The GVA+Salut app can hold the card on your phone. It also gives you a code to collect medication at a pharmacy without the physical card.

The Conselleria’s information line is 012, open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 19:00.

Can you choose or change your doctor or centre?

Yes. Patients of the Valencian Health System have the right to choose a doctor and a centre after adequate information, under conditions set by regulation.

Who can use the procedure

The procedure covers choosing a family doctor, paediatrician or primary care centre. You must be an insured person or beneficiary of the National Health System and hold the individual health card (SIP).

How to request a change

  1. Get the form. The centre you want supplies an application stating the change.
  2. Or file online. Use a digital certificate or Cl@ve.
  3. Add proof if you ask because of work. Send a certificate from the personnel department, or the payslip header showing the workplace address and your details.
  4. Wait for the result. The head of the basic health zone must resolve the request within 15 working days.
  5. Check the result. If it is approved, SIP is updated with your new doctor, paediatrician and/or centre.

You can file the request throughout the year.

When a request is refused

Requests stall on capacity. A request is refused when the doctor you chose already looks after more people than the population assigned per doctor, or than the waiting list allows.

Home visits

If you choose a doctor at a centre other than the one first assigned from your padrón registration, the choice does not bring home visits, urgent or scheduled. Those stay with the staff of your originally assigned centre.

What if you move house?

Tell your health centre; it updates your address and names your new health centre if the new address changes it. If you want to keep your old doctor, make the change request described above.

Where are the health centres?

Your address decides your centre, so check your SIP record. These three sit in different parts of the city.
